Why most window cleaning businesses stay small

Why most window cleaning businesses stay small

Every year thousands of people start a window cleaning business. The barriers to entry are low. a ladder, a bucket, pure water back pack and a Spotless Water Account and a bit of determination will get you going. However, many of those businesses stay small for years. Some never grow at all and some never make it through the first winter.

Over the last thirty years I have watched this happen again and again. I started exactly the same way. In 1996 I was knocking doors with a wooden ladder on my shoulder. At the time it felt like the start of something big. Yet the truth is simple. Many cleaners stay stuck in the early stage of business. We all have friends and family who give us a go as we have made that first step into running a business.

So why does this happen?

Firstly, pricing is often the biggest problem. Many window cleaners charge far too little. They focus on winning work instead of building a proper business. As a result, their round becomes full but their profits stay small. Consequently, they work harder but earn very little more.

Secondly, many owners struggle to step back from the tools. At the start this makes sense. After all, customers expect the owner to do the work. However, growth only happens when systems are built. Instead, many cleaners keep doing everything themselves. Therefore, the business cannot move forward. Darren Johnson quoted – If you want to grow, you have to learn to let go!

In addition, planning is often missing. Most cleaners focus on today’s work. They think about tomorrow’s weather. Yet they rarely think about next year. Because of that, their business simply drifts along. There is no clear direction.

Another common problem is fear of hiring staff. Bringing someone into the business feels risky. After all, wages must be paid every week. Thinking they need a second window cleaning van, rather than teaching how you do it, then think about the expansion with a second or third van. Nevertheless, without help the owner becomes the bottleneck. There are only so many houses one person can clean in a day. Therefore the business remains limited.

Furthermore, many cleaners never build proper systems. Routes stay messy. Pricing becomes inconsistent. Customer communication happens when there is time. Yet strong businesses run on structure. When systems improve, the business becomes easier to manage.

Finally, mindset plays a huge role. Many people start window cleaning for freedom. They want to work for themselves. That is completely understandable. However, freedom only appears when the business grows beyond the owner. Until then, the owner simply owns a job. If you think like a small business, you will always be a small business.

That said, staying small is not always wrong. Some people prefer a simple life and steady income. There is nothing wrong with that choice. However, many cleaners secretly want more. They want better income, more time, and less stress.

The good news is that growth is possible. With better pricing, clear systems, and the right support, a small window cleaning round can become a proper business. I have seen it happen many times.

After all, every large cleaning company once started with a single ladder and a bucket. The difference is simple. At some point, the owner decided to build a business instead of just cleaning windows.
